Give your baby banana the best possible start! 🍌🌱

Every magnificent banana tree starts somewhere — and often it’s a little sucker growing beside its mother plant!

Our 5 Litre Tall Black Poly Planter Bags are an excellent choice for establishing young banana suckers before transplanting them into the garden or a larger, long-term growing bag.

With their tall, narrow design, these nursery-quality bags provide useful growing depth for developing roots while keeping young banana plants manageable and easy to move.

Whether you’re growing a replacement banana plant, establishing a few suckers for the backyard or raising plants for friends and family, these bags are a practical first home.

And best of all, they’re proudly Australian made!

Why use a 5 litre tall bag for banana suckers?

Banana suckers are surprisingly vigorous little plants, but freshly separated suckers need time to develop a healthy, functioning root system.

Planting directly into the ground is certainly an option. However, establishing a young sucker in a planter bag first has some worthwhile advantages.

Here’s why we like the 5 litre tall size:

  • Excellent starter size: Holds approximately 5 litres of growing medium, providing room for a young sucker to establish.
  • Tall growing profile: At approximately 300mm deep, the bag provides generous depth relative to its width for developing roots.
  • Easier watering: A manageable amount of potting mix makes it easier to monitor moisture during establishment.
  • Easy to relocate: Move young plants into a sheltered position during extreme heat, heavy rain or cold weather.
  • Good drainage: Multiple drainage holes allow excess water to escape.
  • Ready for transplanting: Once the plant is established, it can be moved into a larger growing bag or planted directly into the garden.

Think of it as your banana plant’s first home.

Small enough to manage. Deep enough to get growing.

Why a tall bag instead of a standard pot?

Young banana plants develop an expanding fibrous root system as they establish.

Our tall planter bag provides a relatively deep growing space without requiring a large quantity of potting mix.

This makes it a useful option for establishing suckers while they’re still small.

The flexible polyethylene construction also makes it straightforward to remove the bag when you’re ready to transplant, helping you keep the established root ball together.

And unlike many rigid nursery pots, these bags can be stored flat until they’re needed.

Strong, flexible and made for Australian conditions

These aren’t flimsy disposable bags designed to fall apart after a few weeks in the sunshine.

Manufactured in Australia using high-quality virgin polyethylene blended with approximately 40% quality recycled material, our planter bags are designed for professional nursery use.

They incorporate high-grade UV stabilisers for extended outdoor durability, with a manufacturer’s stated durability of more than two years, depending on growing conditions and exposure.

The flexible LDPE construction provides a good balance of strength and practicality, while the black material helps prevent light reaching the root zone.

They’re also designed to separate easily when supplied flat, making potting up quicker and less frustrating.

Good drainage — because bananas hate wet feet!

Bananas love water.

Unfortunately, they don’t particularly enjoy sitting in it.

Our 5 litre tall bags feature multiple drainage holes positioned around the lower and side sections, helping excess water escape from the growing medium.

This is especially important when establishing young suckers, as poorly drained conditions can encourage corm and root rot.

For best results, use a quality, free-draining potting mix and keep it consistently moist rather than waterlogged.

Remember: a banana sucker wants a drink, not a swimming pool!

How to establish your banana sucker

Getting started is relatively straightforward.

1. Choose a healthy sucker. Select suitable, healthy, legally sourced banana planting material. Strong sword suckers are generally preferred when propagating from established banana plants.

2. Prepare your planter bag. Open the bag and fill it with a good-quality, free-draining potting mix.

3. Plant your sucker. Position the prepared sucker securely in the mix, ensuring the corm is properly supported without unnecessarily burying the growing point.

4. Water carefully. Water thoroughly after planting, then maintain consistent moisture without allowing the bag to become waterlogged.

5. Provide some protection. Keep your newly planted sucker in a warm, bright, sheltered position while it establishes. Avoid harsh afternoon sun and strong winds initially.

6. Watch for new growth! Fresh leaves and healthy root development are good signs that your banana sucker is establishing successfully.

7. Transplant when ready. Once your young banana is growing strongly and the root system is becoming established throughout the bag, move it into the ground or a larger growing container.

Australian banana biosecurity regulations restrict the movement of banana planting material in some areas. Always check your state requirements before obtaining or moving suckers.

When should you move your banana into a bigger bag?

Here’s something worth remembering:

Your banana won’t stay little for long!

The 5 litre tall bag is designed for the early establishment stage, not for growing a mature banana plant through to fruiting.

Once your plant is actively growing and developing a substantial root system, it’s time to give it more room.

For backyard growers, there are two main options:

Plant directly into the garden: Choose a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil and plenty of room for the plant to develop.

Move into a larger planter bag: If you’re growing bananas in containers, consider stepping up into one of our larger woven planter bags. For long-term growing through to fruiting, we generally recommend considering a substantial container, with 75–100 litres or more being a practical starting point for many banana varieties.

The right final size depends on the variety, growing conditions and how much watering and feeding you’re prepared to provide.

Australian made quality

Our 5 Litre Tall Poly Planter Bags are manufactured in Australia from quality polyethylene materials and are designed to withstand demanding nursery conditions.

They are also made from recyclable LDPE. Used bags should be recycled through an appropriate soft-plastics collection or specialist recycling program where available, rather than placed in ordinary household kerbside recycling.

From little sucker to big bunch! 🍌

There’s something pretty satisfying about taking a small banana sucker, giving it a good start and eventually watching it grow into a productive banana plant.

Our 5 Litre Tall Banana Sucker Planter Bags make that first stage simple, economical and manageable.

And when your banana outgrows its starter bag, we’ve got larger growing bags and banana fruit bunch covers to help you through the next stages.

Start small. Grow strong. Enjoy the bananas!
