POWER 50/50 Coir Growing Blend – Banana Potting Mix & Root Development
Give your banana plants the perfect balance of moisture and air! 🍌🌱 (Hydrates up to 60+ litres)
See below on page for how much is suggested to use in your growing mix.
Bananas are thirsty plants. They love moisture, grow rapidly in warm weather and need a healthy root system to support those enormous tropical leaves.
But there’s one thing bananas don’t particularly enjoy — sitting in soggy, poorly aerated potting mix!
Our POWER 50/50 Coir Growing Blend combines the moisture-holding benefits of fine coconut coir with the improved drainage and aeration provided by coconut husk chips.
Made from 50% fine coir pith and 50% coconut husk chips, this premium coconut growing medium is an excellent ingredient for creating your own banana potting mix.
Whether you’re establishing young banana suckers, potting up into larger woven growing bags or maintaining container-grown bananas, POWER coir helps create a more favourable environment for healthy root development.
Why use coir when growing bananas?
Banana plants need a consistent supply of water to support their rapid growth.
However, their roots also require oxygen.
A growing medium that holds too much water without adequate air space can restrict root development and increase the risk of root and corm problems.
That’s where POWER coir comes in!
The fine coconut pith helps retain moisture, while the larger husk chips create air spaces throughout the growing medium.
This combination provides a useful balance of water retention, drainage and root aeration.
Benefits for banana growers
- Helps retain moisture: Particularly useful for thirsty banana plants growing in containers.
- Improves aeration: Coconut husk chips create air spaces around developing roots.
- Supports healthy root development: A more balanced growing environment encourages vigorous growth.
- Reduces rapid drying: Helps potting mixes retain moisture between watering.
- Improves potting mix structure: Adds a combination of fine and coarse organic particles.
- Ideal for growing bags: Suitable for mixing into potting media used in our 75L and 100L woven banana growing bags.
- Made from renewable coconut material: A useful alternative to peat-based growing media.
What makes POWER 50/50 different?
Not all coir products are the same.
Some contain almost entirely fine coconut pith, while others consist mainly of large husk chips.
Our POWER blend combines the two.
50% Fine Coconut Coir Pith
Fine coir contains numerous tiny pores that absorb and hold moisture. It can also help retain dissolved nutrients within the growing medium.
This is especially beneficial for banana plants, which need regular access to water and nutrients.
50% Coconut Husk Chips
The larger husk particles help create air spaces within the mix.
These spaces allow oxygen to reach the roots and help excess water move through the growing medium.
Together, the two components create a practical blend for growers wanting both moisture retention and good aeration.

How much POWER coir should I add to my banana potting mix?
For banana plants growing in large containers, we suggest starting with approximately 25–30% hydrated POWER coir in your finished growing mix.
This helps improve moisture retention and aeration without relying entirely on coir for the growing medium.
Our suggested banana growing mix
For a practical starting point, try:
- 45% premium potting mix
- 30% hydrated POWER 50/50 coir
- 15% mature compost
- 10% horticultural perlite
Add an appropriate complete fertiliser according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
This creates a moisture-retentive yet free-draining growing medium suitable for trialling with container-grown bananas.
The ideal proportions may vary depending on your banana variety, local climate, potting mix ingredients and watering practices.
Perfect for our 75L and 100L banana growing bags
If you’re growing bananas in one of our large woven planter bags, POWER coir is a particularly useful ingredient.
Large banana plants can use considerable amounts of water during warm weather.
Adding coir to your potting mix helps retain moisture, while the husk chips and perlite provide air spaces to support healthy roots.
For a 75 litre growing bag, approximately 22.5 litres of hydrated POWER coir would make up 30% of the mix.
For a 100 litre growing bag, approximately 30 litres of hydrated POWER coir would provide the same proportion.
Remember to allow some space at the top of your bag for watering.
Great for establishing banana suckers
POWER coir can also be useful when potting up young banana suckers.
Newly separated suckers need a growing medium that remains lightly moist while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Mixing POWER coir with quality potting mix can help achieve that balance.
For smaller starter bags, be particularly careful not to overwater. Young suckers with limited roots may use water much more slowly than established plants.
How to expand your compressed coir block
One of the great things about compressed coir is how easy it is to store and transport.
A relatively compact 4.5kg block expands into approximately 60 litres of growing medium once hydrated.
Step 1 – Choose a suitable container
Place the compressed block in a large wheelbarrow, tub or similar container.
Step 2 – Add water
Start with approximately 25 litres of clean water, as suggested for this product.
Step 3 – Allow the block to expand
The coir will gradually absorb the water and begin breaking apart.
Step 4 – Fluff the material
Gently separate the coir as it expands, adding more water if necessary.
Step 5 – Mix with your other ingredients
Once fully hydrated and loosened, combine the coir with your potting mix, compost and perlite.
And that’s it!
You’ve turned one compact block into a generous quantity of coconut growing medium.
Does coir contain fertiliser?
Coir is primarily a growing medium, not a plant food.
Although it can retain water and dissolved nutrients, it doesn’t supply what a hungry banana plant needs.
For strong growth and fruit production, bananas require regular feeding with an appropriate complete fertiliser.
Pay particular attention to potassium, which is important for banana growth and fruit development.
A renewable coconut-based growing medium
POWER coir is manufactured using coconut husk material sourced from Sri Lanka.
Coconut husks are a renewable agricultural resource that can be processed into useful horticultural growing media.
Rather than relying entirely on peat-based products, growers can incorporate coconut coir into their potting mixes.
