Description

Protect your bananas before the birds, bats and sun get to them! 🍌

You’ve watered, fertilised and patiently watched your banana plant grow. Finally, there’s a beautiful bunch of bananas hanging from the tree!

Now comes the important part — making sure you get to enjoy the bananas you’ve worked so hard to grow!

Our Australian Made Blue & Silver Banana Bunch Covers are designed to help protect developing banana fruit from sunburn, wind damage, rubbing leaves, birds, flying foxes and other unwanted visitors.

Also known as banana bags, banana bunch bags or banana ripening covers, these protective bags are widely used by Australian banana growers to help produce healthier-looking, better-quality fruit.

Whether you’ve got one banana plant in the backyard or a whole plantation, our premium-quality covers are a simple and economical way to help protect your harvest.

And best of all, they’re proudly Australian made!

Why put a cover over your bananas?

Growing a beautiful bunch of bananas can take months.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take nearly as long for hungry wildlife, scorching sunshine or strong winds to damage your fruit.

A good banana bunch cover creates a protective barrier around the developing bananas, helping reduce several common problems.

Protect your bananas from sunburn ☀️

Australian sunshine can be pretty unforgiving.

Direct exposure to intense sunlight can damage banana skins, causing discolouration and sunburn.

Our blue and silver covers feature a reflective silver side that helps reduce the amount of direct solar radiation reaching the bunch.

Important tip: Always position the silver side towards the strongest sunshine.

The reflective surface helps shield your developing bananas during hot, sunny weather.

Help discourage birds and flying foxes 🦇

It seems we’re not the only ones who enjoy bananas!

Birds, flying foxes and other wildlife can cause considerable damage to exposed banana bunches.

Sometimes they’re attracted to the fruit itself. Other times, they may be visiting the banana flower or simply moving around the plant.

Either way, scratches, bruises and damaged fruit can be the unfortunate result.

A banana bunch cover provides a physical barrier that can help reduce access and incidental damage.

While no lightweight cover can guarantee protection from determined wildlife, bagging your bananas is a worthwhile precaution.

Reduce wind and leaf damage

Have you ever noticed how easily banana leaves tear in the wind?

Those large leaves can repeatedly rub against a developing bunch, leaving marks and scratches on the fruit.

Our protective banana bags help shield the bunch from this constant contact.

That means fewer blemishes and a better chance of harvesting attractive, undamaged bananas.

Encourage better fruit development

There’s a reason banana growers have been covering bunches for decades.

Bunch covers can help create a more favourable environment around developing fruit, moderating exposure to sun and wind.

Under suitable growing conditions, bagging can contribute to improved fruit development, more consistent fruit quality and, in some circumstances, increased bunch weight.

Results depend on your banana variety, local climate, plant health and growing conditions.

Of course, your banana still needs plenty of sunshine on its leaves, adequate water and good nutrition.

The cover is there to protect the fruit — not do all the growing for you!

Premium Australian-made quality

Not all banana bags are created equal.

Our Blue & Silver Banana Bunch Covers are manufactured in Australia using quality polyethylene film developed for agricultural use.

They include UV stabilisers to help the material withstand exposure to Australia’s strong sunlight.

The covers are flexible, lightweight and easy to install, yet durable enough for normal outdoor growing conditions.

They’re also manufactured using approximately 40% high-quality recycled material, helping reduce the amount of virgin plastic required.

When you’re growing bananas in Australian conditions, it makes sense to use a cover designed with those conditions in mind.

When should you put a bag over your banana bunch?

Timing is important, but fortunately it’s not particularly complicated.

The ideal time to fit your banana bunch cover is generally once the bananas have formed and the fingers begin curving upwards.

By this stage, the protective flower bracts covering the developing hands will usually have fallen away, and the flower tips will have started to dry.

Your bunch is now ready for its protective cover.

What if birds or bats are already causing trouble?

If wildlife is a significant problem in your garden, you may choose to cover the bunch earlier, shortly after the banana bell appears.

Just remember that the developing bunch will continue shedding flower bracts.

If you install the cover early, check it regularly and remove any trapped flower material that could collect moisture or interfere with fruit development.

For most backyard growers, waiting until the fingers have formed and started turning upwards is the simplest approach.

How to use your banana bunch cover

Don’t worry — you don’t need to be a commercial banana grower to fit one!

Step 1 – Check your bunch

Make sure the bananas have developed sufficiently and that the cover is large enough to extend below the lowest hand.

Step 2 – Open the cover

Carefully open the bag and identify the blue and reflective silver sections.

Step 3 – Slide it over the bunch

Gently position the cover over the developing bananas without damaging the fruit or stalk.

Step 4 – Secure the top

Gather the cover around the bunch stalk above the first hand of bananas.

Use string or a suitable zip tie to secure it, leaving enough room to avoid constricting the stalk as the bunch develops.

Step 5 – Face the silver towards the sun

Position the reflective silver section towards the strongest direct sunlight to help reduce sunburn.

Step 6 – Leave the bottom open

This is important!

The bottom of the cover should hang below the last hand of bananas and remain open to allow ventilation and moisture to escape.

And that’s it!

Your bananas now have their own protective raincoat.

Well, sort of. 🍌

Why is the banana bag supplied open at both ends?

You might be wondering why we don’t simply seal the whole bunch inside the bag.

The answer is airflow.

Bananas grow in warm, often humid conditions, and completely enclosing the bunch can encourage condensation and excessive moisture.

Our covers are designed to be secured at the top while remaining open at the bottom for ventilation.

This helps reduce moisture build-up around the fruit while still providing useful protection from the elements.

The open-ended design also makes the covers easy to install and remove.

Why blue and silver?

There’s more to the colour combination than simply making your banana bunch look fashionable!

The silver section helps reflect incoming sunlight and reduce direct solar exposure on the fruit.

The blue section provides a coloured protective layer and can also help growers identify different groups of covered bunches.

Commercial banana farms sometimes use different coloured bags at different times of the year to help keep track of bunch development and approximate harvesting dates.

For the average backyard grower, the most important thing is simply getting the cover on at the right time and positioning the reflective section correctly.

Will a banana cover make my bananas ripen faster?

Banana bunch covers can influence the conditions around developing fruit, including temperature and exposure to the elements.

Under some conditions, this may help fruit develop more consistently or reach harvest maturity sooner.

However, a bunch cover isn’t a shortcut for proper banana care.

Water, nutrition, variety, temperature and the number of healthy leaves all influence how quickly your bananas grow.

And remember, bananas don’t need to turn yellow on the tree before you harvest them.

Mature green bananas can be picked and ripened indoors.

When should I harvest my covered bananas?

Here’s a useful trick.

Don’t just watch the colour — watch the shape!

Immature bananas have fairly pronounced angular edges.

As they develop and fill out, the fruit becomes plumper and those sharp corners begin rounding off.

That’s a good indication the bunch is approaching harvest maturity.

You can remove a mature-looking finger and allow it to ripen indoors to test whether the bunch is ready.

If it ripens properly and tastes delicious, congratulations!

You’ve successfully grown your own bananas.

If not, leave the bunch a little longer and try again.

It’s a tough job, but somebody has to taste-test the bananas.

Can banana bunch covers be reused?

Depending on their condition after harvesting, our quality UV-stabilised banana covers may be suitable for reuse.

Carefully remove the cover, inspect it for tears or deterioration and clean it before storing.

Allow it to dry completely and keep it somewhere protected from sunlight until your next bunch is ready.

If the cover has become brittle, badly torn or damaged, replace it.

Used LDPE covers may be recyclable through specialist soft-plastics recycling programs where accepted. They should not be placed in ordinary household kerbside recycling unless your local service specifically accepts them.

Suitable for backyard growers and commercial banana farms

Whether you’re protecting your very first banana bunch or managing dozens of plants, our covers offer a practical solution.

They’re suitable for many common banana varieties, provided the developing bunch fits comfortably inside the cover.

Growing a particularly large bunch?

We also offer Extra Large Banana Bunch Covers for growers needing additional length and width.

Don’t let the wildlife enjoy your bananas before you do!

There’s nothing quite like harvesting your own home-grown bananas.

But after months of watering, feeding and watching that bunch develop, the last thing you want is damaged fruit.

Our Australian Made Blue & Silver Banana Bunch Covers help protect your harvest from sunburn, rubbing, wind and unwanted visitors.

They’re easy to install, economical and made with Australian growing conditions in mind.

Give your bananas the protection they deserve — and give yourself the best chance of enjoying the harvest!
